If they go out of business, or for whatever other reason I'm denied their service, I wont lose access to just one or two games. It hides behind a facade of security, but it is really potentially the most malicious. In my opinion, Steam is a worst case scenario.

Taleworld's scheme of having an install counter that automatically resets every once in awhile is pretty good, assuming they don't go out of business. I've seen some pretty decent DRM schemes. There is a point at which opposing just about every form of DRM does lead me to wonder if there is any legitimate reason for opposing it other than piracy. It's not really particularly reliable, and its reputation is due primarily to stupidity.

I suppose if I didn't care about the implication that access to my software is a privilege, well, that'd be pretty awesome!Īs far as DRM goes, Steam is reliable, unobtrusive, and its reputation is fantastic. Securom doesn't even tell me it's running, most of the time! It is pretty, though, and comes with nifty features. *shrug* Steam isn't any more user friendly than securom. Either way, it's the principle of the matter.įiraxis has a right to protect their games, and they've chosen the most user friendly, reliable way to do that. I've got no concrete evidence, but I've heard that Steam has shut down accounts of people who have sued them or for other reasons. It won't happen, because if Steam turns off even one game, that's the end of their business. So now we're worried about "theoretical" issues? Give me a break. Mount&Blade is one of the best games I've ever played. Hooray for creative coding techniques like procedural generation.

There's plenty of profit in PC gaming if you scale down the games. Devs don't make games for PC because the PC market hasn't grown as fast as the console market, but they still expect to set the same kind of budget for PC games. If the DRM can't prevent that (and it doesn't), it's pointless.Īgain, this sort of attitude is exactly why devs don't like to make games for the PC.

The DRM is cracked almost instantly, then everybody get's the game through torrents. You say it's pointless, but it's not That'd be true if the pirates still relied on relatively slow means of trade, but with torrents, it really is pointless. You don't support hedges against casual piracy at all for digitally distributed games? That makes no sense. You are mostly right, though, and as I've said, I would prefer to install malware like securom than sign away the right to play the games that I've paid for.

There are a few outlets which offer some DRM free games.

It's between which kinds of DRM you'll get. But your choice is not between no DRM and DRM.

Yes, and if wishes were horses we'd all ride. For retail, a simple CD check or cd key to keep out the casual pirates should suffice. " said: I would rather have no DRM in digital distribution, as it's pretty much pointless. I will never ever buy a DRM game over 25% of original price, so they lose a said: When I buy a game, I expect to own it, not rent it. What I will do is buy it at retail in about 2 years for about 25% of original cost, then make a back-up copy, bypassing all the controls and play the game how I want, leaving me to sell the game, unused, if I ever want to. As much as I truly love Civ IV, hell, I was addicted to it, I will not buy Civ 5 under these conditions. It's a terrible policy with terrible implications. If your steam account is closed, you can't play your games anymore. Access to the games you've already paid for is considered a service. As to what's wrong with Steam as DRM? I've already said. " I would rather have no DRM in digital distribution, as it's pretty much pointless. Perhaps I am just ignorant to the multitudes of situations where one's experience would be sullied by Valve's DRM, if so, please, indulge me. Personally I wouldn't say that Valve is evil in the least, they are fantastic. What DRM would you rather have in your games? It's kind of like politics, who is the lesser of the evils.

As far as I can tell Valve has what is probably the best form of DRM when placed next to everything else. Said: " said: " Really? What's so bad about it.
